Camp
Every Spring and Summer a group of teachers, volunteers and student counselors come together to create a “one of a kind” experience for the children at the Vishnu Mandir in Toronto, Canada.
The Goals for the Camp
Provide a safe, fun and enriching experience founded on the cornerstones of respect, responsibility, teamwork and positive social interactions
Raise confident, inclusive leaders who focus on bettering their community and themselves
Instill a sense of belonging to this community by helping children find their “Hindu Identity” and teaching them how that aligns with being model Canadian citizens
Months of planning, training and effort are put into creating an experience that enriches the hearts and minds of young children. The objective and vision of the yearly Camp is to build confidence, communication, teamwork and leadership skills. We create an interactive experience where children connect to Hindu values and teachings in a fun atmosphere through prayers, storytelling, crafts, yoga, meditation, dance classes, cooking and outdoor activities in a safe and spiritual environment. Children are divided into age appropriate groups, which are led by groups of enthusiastic student counselors, teachers and volunteers.

Inspired by the visit of the International Peace Run Team visiting the Peace Park on July 29, 2023, the Summer Camp held a Peace Project art activity with its 112 campers. Each camper created a poster promoting peace, and 43 of those posters were donated to the International Peace Run Team who brought the campers’ artwork to Chicago, to be displayed at the “Art from the Heart” exhibit, concurrent with the Parliament of the World Religions celebrating 130 years. Parliament convenings attract participants from more than 200 diverse religious, indigenous, and secular beliefs and more than 80 nations.
Camp 2024
VOV’s 30th Summer Camp 2024 celebrated the recent Ram Yatra and held a Peace, Unity and Inclusion project with its 94 campers. Each camper created a drawing of a tree, using their fingerprints for the leaves, plus a group poster. The drawing was glued to coloured paper and the reverse had the translation of the Vedic History theme of Tat Twam Asi (That Thou Art). A tree exemplifies Vedanta's teaching of oneness in diversity, and the fingerprints indicate our unique individuality. Ishwara is the tree roots and trunk, and we all are manifested as various uniquely distinct branches and leaves. Inner and outer peace can be achieved if we can interrelate the way branches and leaves do with one another.
